BREAD (San Francisco DJ collective)
Encyclopedia-style overview of BREAD's timeline, programming model, and Bread FM archive.
BREAD was a San Francisco-based DJ collective and recurring club night active from 2014 through the early 2020s. The project operated as both a party series and a radio/mix platform under the name Bread FM.
Founded in 2014, BREAD functioned as a resident-driven club night featuring a rotating core of DJs alongside touring and local guest artists. Programming emphasized rhythm-forward and globally influenced electronic music, including hybrid club forms, bass-oriented styles, and experimental dance music. The collective became known for presenting Bay Area debuts by emerging artists and for maintaining a flexible, genre-agnostic booking approach.
In 2017, the collective launched Bread FM, initially as a local radio broadcast before transitioning to online distribution and podcast platforms. The mix series documented resident and guest sets and operated as an archival extension of the club night. From 2022 to 2023, Bread FM episodes were broadcast via Internet Public Radio.
BREAD’s activities spanned a period of significant change in San Francisco nightlife, including venue turnover, rising operating costs, and pandemic-related disruptions. While not heavily covered in mainstream press, the collective maintained a consistent presence within the city’s electronic music community and contributed to cross-regional exchanges with artists from Oakland, Los Angeles, and beyond.
Publicly archived Bread FM episodes conclude in April 2023.
