The Story of BREAD
How a San Francisco club night became a fundraiser stream and then a radio show, 2015–2024.
BREAD started in San Francisco in 2014. The idea was a club night for riskier, less commercial dance music than the city usually booked. Cage A (Kanav) and Prawns started it, and residents and collaborators came and went over the years.

2014–2015: Getting started
Planning started in 2014. The first night was a pilot with Grime City at F8 on February 13, 2015, with Nevermind and Helix. Numbered BREAD nights followed through the rest of the year, including BREAD #3 with Doctor Jeep in November.
2016: Bigger bookings
2016 was the busiest year on record. Alongside the numbered nights (Jlin and Iyer at BREAD #5; Pinch, Rabit, Mumdance, and Logos at BREAD #10), there were partner nights: the Toasted Trax series, Parameter x BREAD, and a Lobster Theremin showcase with Sure Thing.
2017–2018: Underground SF
In 2017 more nights moved to Underground SF, with guests like DJ J Heat, Mr. Mitch, Kozee, Roska, and Kelman Duran. The regular club nights wound down in 2018.
2020–2021: Fundraiser streams
When the pandemic closed the clubs, BREAD moved to Twitch. The streams raised money for groups including NBDA, Atlanta Solidarity Fund, Rebuilding Alliance, and Oxygen for India.
2022–2024: Radio
In 2022 BREAD FM started a monthly show on Internet Public Radio, and in 2023 it took up a residency on HKCR. BREAD FM also had a Wednesday afternoon show on Radio Valencia; the cover art is on the Radio shows page. In March 2024 BREAD announced a night in SoMa.
